1750年，一位来自阿伯丁名叫罗伯特戈登的富商出资创建了罗伯特戈登医院，从那时起，罗伯特戈登大学的历史就开始了。罗伯特戈登医院在1881年发展成为一所学院，在1903年它又发展成为罗伯特戈登工学院，1965年，它成为罗伯特戈登技术学院。1992年，它正式被授予大学称号。罗伯特戈登大学位于英国苏格兰东北部的城市阿伯丁。阿伯丁是苏格兰的第三大城市，以其散落在城市各处的由花岗岩建成古老建筑而著称。这个城市拥有大约250，000人口，因为阿伯丁是北海近海石油和天然气工业的商业和技术中心，因而赢得"欧洲石油之都"的称号。
罗伯特戈登大学在所有苏格兰大学中经济实力最强。现在正耗资几百万英镑在Garthdee校园内修建一座非常先进的建筑，以供社会卫生学院使用。新楼于2002年9月投入使用后将为7个年级多的300名教职工和3000名学生提供高质量的住宿。图书馆为学生的课程学习和研究提供了专门的电子资料、互联网、书籍、杂志和其他材料。每个校区都有学习设施，友好的工作人员随时解答学生的问题。图书馆设施开放时间很长，全学期每天都开放。此外，图书馆还设有工作室在信息检索技术上支持教师和学生的科研活动。其他设施还有影印机、传真机、针对视力较差者的特殊设备和针对远程学生的邮政贷款服务。
罗伯特高登大学的宿舍都是自供伙食的，学生需要自己准备食物。一个房间能容纳3到8个学生共同居住，以7到8人为多数。房间配有标准的淋浴和卫生间设施，所有房间都禁止吸烟。所有卧室的门都配有门锁，给学生自己的独立空间。学生在晚上11到早上8点间需在寝室保持安静。宿舍有分工不同的各类员工，包括:宿舍助理、看守员工、管理员和家庭服务人员等，给学生提供各种周到的生活服务。大学优先为国际学生安排住宿，可自行租房，学校会提供帮助。大学在阿伯丁市有5个住宿区域，均配套自习教室、食堂、娱乐设置和洗衣服务等生活设施。每个国际学生都有各种器皿、餐具和床单等。但是需自备毛巾。房间提供全天候24小时上网，并且住宿安有出入系统。花费:64~75英镑每周。
