阿伯泰邓迪大学的前身是1888年建立的邓迪科技学院。大学是一所友善的学府，拥有学生4700名，68%的学生来自苏格兰，4%来自欧洲之外的国家如中国、印度、马来西亚和巴基斯坦。英国唯一一所在电脑游戏技术和计算机技术两方面都获得官方认可的大学。被授予为英国优秀电脑游戏的第一中心，开设世界领先的计算机游戏技术(Computer Game)课程，电脑艺术学位(Computer Artist)，其支撑的创意产业，支持了英国各地600,000个就业机会，为英国经济贡献了200多亿英镑，该校是苏格兰地区环境研究的最佳大学之一，英国投资IT设备，在苏格兰投资图书馆设备的顶尖大学之一。苏格兰法学研究、心理学研究、环境科学研究方面的领先现代大学(RAE2008)，是全英现代化的顶级大学之一，是最近五年中进步最大的英国大学之一。
该校是计算机设施投资最高的英国大学;是全英大学图书馆设施投资最高的五所大学之一*;荣获多项奖的图书馆。正如《金融时报》(2002年5月)*评论的那样，阿伯泰邓迪大学在投资学生用的计算机设施方面，居于领先地位。学生可使用电子与其他信息资源，这对于学习开设的每个课程至关重要;校园上下有供学生使用的联网计算机;每台电脑可供四名学生使用，这个比例是全英大学中最高之一。大学目前正在实施一项确保大学的硬件与软件都是行业标准的强化方案。这些设施使学生能免费使用因特网。1998年6月女王陛下为大学的图书馆正式揭幕。图书馆内有设备齐全的教授信息与信息技术技能的讲座室、小组学习室、语言中心与自习室，以及法律专科图书馆。图书馆的某些部门24小时都供学生使用信息技术与学习设施，以及休息场所。
分配宿舍是，学校给予新生和初次来邓迪的外国留学生已优先选择权。那些不想在学校提供的学生公寓入住的学生，宿管办公室会帮助你寻找合适的私人出租房。住在学生公寓是极富乐趣的，而且能交到很多新朋友。在有独立炉灶的公寓，学生有独立卧室，共用一个厨房或客厅。这样既能为同学间的娱乐活动提供场所，也能保证独立卧室里安静的学习环境。住宿合同时长为一个学年，包括圣诞节和复活节，一般是36至38周。
