Keele University
英国基尔大学始建於1949年，是英国环境最优美的大学校园之一。它是一所研究式校园大学，致力于广泛的学科领域以及交叉学科领域的研 究和教育，是英国大学中提供双学位课程的先驱。它提供高质量的理科、社会科学、管理学和人文学科及英语语言培训等学位课程和研究项目。基尔大学坐落在英格兰中部、斯塔福德郡的斯托克城附近，并靠近纽卡斯尔莱姆河畔。斯托克城的陶瓷制品在国际上享有盛誉。斯塔福德郡内有剧院、博物馆和音乐厅，其文化氛围非常浓厚。基尔大学的周围地区景色宜人，田地和林区比比皆是；不远处还有世界闻名的皮克区，其景色美不胜收。基尔位于英国中心的斯塔福德郡，距离伯明翰北部和曼彻斯特南部分别为60英里，是当地经济的主要贡献者。
基尔大学创立于1949年，前身为北斯塔福德郡大学学院。大学创始人为A. D. Lindsay，后获得英国牛津大学贝利奥尔学院的硕士学位。 Lindsay是一名工人阶级成人教育的坚定拥护者，他曾在给北斯塔福德郡工人教育协会的演讲中第一次提出“人民大学”的理念。 1946年3月13日，Lindsay在致信大学教育资助委员会主席 Walter Moberly爵士时曾提议建立新型大学。按照当时的制度，新成立的大学是没有学位授予资格的，新大学只能够从伦敦大学获得校外学位。Lindsay主张新大学能够在成熟大学的协助下，建立自己的课程大纲，并希望取消伦敦校外学位的限制。Lindsay也曾致信牛津大学副校长，希望能够获得这样的协助。 最终，特伦河畔斯托克市城市委员会成立了一个试验性的委员会，由Lindsay任主席。委员会得到了伊特鲁里亚牧师，城市委员会劳工集团领袖Alderman Thomas Horwood的支持。委员会于1948年1月从大学教育资助委员会获得了公共基金，并由此从Ralph Sneyd处购得了Keele Hall，一幢位于纽卡斯尔莱姆河畔郊区的华丽住宅。Keele Hall是Sneyd家族祖传的住宅，曾经在二战期间被战争办公室征为军用。委员会以31000英镑的价格获得了Sneyd家族的大量房产以及很多由军队建造的一些未竣工的房屋。 由此，大学学院进入稳定发展阶段，于1962年升为大学资质，并于当年一月被授予年度的皇家特许状，并开始正式采用基尔大学（University of Keele）的命名。虽然大学采用的是Keele University，但University of Keele至今仍然是获得官方认可的大学名称。在获得大学资质后，基尔成为了继萨塞克斯大学在1961年获得皇家特许状后的英国第二所新大学。1968年，医学教育皇家委员会签署了关于在基尔大学设立医学院的可行性报告 （即通常所知的Todd报告）。报告认为北斯塔福德郡拥有大量人口以及数所大型医院，将是一个新建医学院的理想地点。然而，考虑到经济和教育效应，在基尔大学成立医学院一年需要招收至少150名学生，并且在在那个阶段，基尔大学规模尚小，还不足以支持一个如此规模的医学院。然而，在1978年，基尔大学的研究生医学院成立了。
Keele Hall, 曾为Smeyd家族的祖传豪华住宅，现为基尔大学的一部分。 校园设施包括一个天文观测台，一个艺术画廊，一个植物园，一个大教堂，一个伊斯兰中心，各色商店，咖啡厅，以及各类就餐和出售饮料的场所。紧邻基尔大学的入口处，就有一个高尔夫球场和训练场。 基尔大学还建成了一流的校园科学和商务园以及会议中心。 基尔大学通过了一项70英亩的建造计划，这项建造计划将包括教学楼与宿舍楼的兴建，以容纳日渐增长的学生数量。 图书馆在校园有一个主图书馆，分为几个不同的区域，配有一些可以上网的电脑设备。另外还有一个专门的法律图书馆，并且在图书馆底楼，有1000多本期刊和杂志可供借阅。 另外，学校还有一个健康类图书馆，有需要的学生可以前往借阅。 信息技术在大学校园建筑里分布着许多电脑房，包括学校图书馆。学生可以在所有公共区域和自己的房间无线上网，使用的是世界范围内通用的eduroom热点接入，但是P2P软件是不允许的。校园平均连接速度为100兆以上。 福利，学校为学生提供了很好的福利政策。学生可前往相关部门具体了解情况。 医疗在基尔大学的健康诊所里有一位配药医生和一位牙医，在Horwood Hall的东部。如果你超过19岁，你就必须支付任何牙科治疗的费用。另外在学校里没有药房。最近的医院是在Newcastle-Under-Lyme，大约3英里路程。 商店在校园的中心地区有4家商店，包括报纸铺、小型超市、邮局等。学生大多数喜欢在纽卡斯尔的一些超市购买零食。另外，马路上有一些高端的商店和一些不连锁的商店，供应着各种各样的商品。另外在Hanley有一个乐购快车，比纽卡斯尔的一些商店供应了更多的商品。 银行在基尔校园里有一个Natwest银行，另外有很多自动银行存取款机器，方便学生的使用。
基尔大学有五幢学生宿舍楼。其中Barnes, Lindsay, Holly Cross，The Oaks 和 Horwood 位于大学主校区的校园内，而The Hawthorns 宿舍楼位于距校园大门外不远处的基尔村。这些宿舍共同为大约70%的全日制学生提供住宿。 Barnes Hall 未设M单元，(单元编号为A至L，N至X)，这与L单元旁边的大片空地共同谱写了Barnes Hall的都市传奇。传说M单元曾因一个废弃的矿道曾沉入地底，当然，这只是一个传说，更可信的原因是由于地面下沉而变得不够安全并最终被拆毁了。
